Ethnicity within a group:

-Some people in a specific ethnic group may be discrminated agaisnt by their own race because they are not following the "guidelines" that define them as members of that culture.

-Some people even go to the limits of marrying people of different race just to break themselves away from their ethnic group even faster.

-Immigrants have been shown to choose not to speak their native language when they come to America, so they can fit into the American culture more, and not even worry about what they are doing to their original roots.

-Interracial marriages are becoming more and more accepted by the world as time goes on.

For the concept of discrimination we can use the idea of racism or stereotyping others, and include that in the story somehow
Diversity is a very important part of our society today. America is a country composed of many different types of people with many different back rounds. One of the many places where a wide range of diverse people can be found is in schools. Classrooms around the world are filled with all different types of children. It is very important to be aware of the wide range of cultures that students have in the classroom. Some children may seem very different to others because of where they are from and because of their culture. It is extremely crucial for teachers to recognize differences in students and to treat all of them equally. It is also extremely important for teachers to help promote and spread diversity in their classrooms. This will help make schools a more diverse place where students are more accepting of students that are different from themselves.

There are too many children that do not receive that education that they deserve strictly because they have a different culture. Taking steps to make teachers more aware of the problem can greatly improve the current situation.

realize that this type of behavior is inappropriate. Much of this teasing takes place in the classroom. When a teacher witnesses a child saying hurtful or disrespectful things, they should immediately address the situation. Some teachers do not want to become involved in the situation and try to leave the discipline up to the parents. Many parents, though, do no realize that their children are engaging in this type of behavior because it takes place in class. Teachers need to step in and correct the child so that they can learn that this type of behavior is not acceptable. When this type of behavior arises, the teacher should speak directly to the child. They should say things like, “It is not okay to use that word to describe Tommy. That word hurts his feelings and makes him feel sad.”

Teachers can include books, toys, and materials used in the learning process that discuss physical, racial, and ethnic differences. Projects can be done where students are assigned various cultures to learn about. This will allow students to research and learn information about people that are different from them. It can also help the student to see that each culture has unique traits that should be respected just like how things in their own culture are respected. The projects can be presented to the class so the students will become informed about many of the different cultures that there are. Teachers can also provide opportunities for children to interact with other children who are racially or culturally different form themselves. This can be done in a wide range of ways such as talent shows or even show and tell activities. This will allow for students to become familiar with cultures and the differences that may be associated with them.

It is also very crucial to start teaching diversity to children at a very early age. Teachers play a very strong role because they are in a position to affect how children perceive different things and different people. Everyone should have the right to a good education regardless of who they are or where they come from. This is the overall goal of diversity in the classroom.
Here's my info. since I compiled the script, I forgot to post it earlier, so here it is now.
Problems:

• By 2025, the report estimates, Hispanic children will compose up to 25 percent of the school-age population.

• According to the report, the gap begins to develop with the preparation for preschoolers, and widens as Latino youngsters progress through school: In 1998, only 20 percent of three-year-old Hispanic children were enrolled in early-childhood programs, versus 42 percent of white and 44 percent of African American three-year-olds.

• Currently, only 55 percent of Latinos ages 25 and older have completed high school or additional education, compared with 84 percent of whites and 76 percent of African Americans. About 50 percent of Hispanic students are placed in general-level high school courses that do not prepare students for college or technical school, as opposed to 39 percent of white students and 40 percent of African American students.

• low attendance by Hispanics in early childhood programs;

• poverty;

• limited English proficiency;

• minimal coordination among parents, schools, and community organizations on behalf of students;

• isolation in resource-poor schools;

• low expectations for Hispanic students by teachers;

• tracking of Hispanic students into less rigorous classes.
